If you prefer to read the show this is the script I work from. I did go off script quite a bit on this episode so I hope you will consider taking a few minutes to listen.

his is PodcastJunky and I listen to it all. I share the best stuff on my iPod and ask you the question…What are you listening to?
And to answer that question, my call in line (714) 855-2639

On today’s show CC Chapman’s Managing The Gray.

You may already know CC from his music shows Accident Hash and U-Turn Cafe. I’d like to show you the other side of CC Chapman .

I think I’ll let him introduce himself with the intro to a recent episode of Managing the Gray .

***Clip from Managing the Gray episode Skittle and SXSW*****

I like how he starts of that episode with kind of a quick run down of some of the roles he plays in life. We all play many different roles. In the world of new media we all just play those roles more publicly.

Managing the Gray is about PR/Marketing but done in the world of new media. The words “Marketing” and “PR” give me that icky feeling and I tend to put my Shields up. Done right, done in a new media way, it’s not so icky.

Big corporations, small businesses and old media are having a heck of a time trying to figure us out. The old methods of media are simply not working any more in a world where savvy potential customers are finding ways to get around or simply ignore traditional advertising.

Now for the longer clip. I’m going to play a story CC told about how Comcast Cable used new media, specifically twitter to turn a disgruntled customer into a happy customer singing the praises of Comcast.

***Clip from Managing the Gray episode “Comcast Wins with Twitter***

So that is CC’s view on how one company is actually using twitter to improve their image and talk WITH customers not AT us.

Now on a personal note, a couple of weeks ago my husband was laid off from his job. The prospects for a new job in his industry are slim.  I’ve been a stay at home mom for the past 2 1/2 years so getting back into the workforce will be no easy task.

For a few days there we were both in a fear based depression. It’s scary having no income. I of course turned to my podcasts. I had already listened to many episodes of Managing the Gray but I re-downloaded and re-listened to each and every episode.

CC does not include the role of motivational speaker in his bio but I think he should. He reached into that quicksand of depression and pulled me right out. That incredible energy he has and his amazing outlook on life is contagious.I am very hopeful for the future. For that I will be eternally grateful to CC Chapman.

Carabiner_final.jpg
From Sex is Fun to PediaCast. This is podcastJunky and I listen to it all. I share the best stuff on my ipod and ask you the question…What are you listening to?
And to answer that question, my call in line (714) 855-2639

On today’s show if you like This American Life, Extreme sports or Disneyland than I have a show for you. Dirtbag Diaries.

Lately in our home my husband has been championing this show. He even called himself an advocate for the show. Finely on the way home from a family outing he knew I was trapped listening to whatever he wanted to play. He connected his ipod and played “Help Wanted” from Dirtbag Diaries . I have to admit, I was hooked.

What blew me away was the way it felt like an episode of This American Life. If you’ve never listened to
This American Life you should give it a try, it was at the top of the itunes popularity since it was added to itunes until it was surpassed by Oprah.

It’s primarily a journalistic show that uses essays, memoirs, found and field recordings to tell true stories in a unique way.

Dirtbag Diaries has a similar feel to TAL. But unlike TAL, Dirtbag Diaries focuses on Extreme Sports. Not so much on the sport itself but on the people involved and their stories. You Disney folks hold on, there’s something in this for you too.

Lets listen to the opening of Help Wanted.

*Clip from beginning of
“Help Wanted” from Dirtbag Diaries 00:16 – 03:30*

Now some minor sound issues in this one episode aside that opening could easily pass for an episode of TAL. Like it’s just a slightly less polished version. Now what could be the reason this show is not quite as polished? Oh wait, I know. TAL has a large staff of writers, editors and talent. Dirtbag Diaries has Fitz Cahall. That’s it one guy. He’s had some help from his wife and brother but for the most part this one guy puts together a show with quality rivals one of the most popular shows on public radio around.

Let’s listen to some more.

*Clip from “Help Wanted” from Dirtbag Diaries 05:05 – 06:46*

Have I gotten you hooked yet? This show is so good I had trouble choosing from so many good clips. Now when you get a bunch of young climbers together in a relatively unsupervised situation, there’s going to be trouble.

*Clip from beginning of “Help Wanted” from Dirtbag Diaries 13:32 – 16:07

Boy that Tink, I knew she had an attitude but sheesh. There’s more to that Tink story but you will have to listen to the episode to hear it. Dirtbag Diaries does more than this Micky Mouse stuff. Fitz’s wife
Becca Cahall brings does a story about getting older and skiing faster in the episode “All These Things” and in”One Golden Hour” we learn the survival story of survival after a fall that could have killed him if it were not for the work of first responders and “The Golden Hour” between life and death. And much more at Dirtbag Diaries. the link will be in the show notes.

Don’t forget to send in your entry for a signed of Scott Sigler’s INFECTED. The due date is May 28. infected/giantbookshot.jpg
Because of shipping costs this offer is good only in the Continental United States. If you are outside the US you are more than welcome to enter the contest but I will ask you to cover the mailing costs if you win.

To enter send your name, mailing address, and a photo of your self with your copy of INFECTED to

Now for some Link Love:

In the show intro I mentioned
Sex is Fun, they are an award winning podcast Dedicated to the rational discussion of human sexuality from the approach of fun, enjoyment and pleasure. This one is not for the kids but as long as you’re an adult and not to sensitive the the topic of human sexuality being discussed with a little humor than this is a show to check out.

And then if you’re not careful, you might find yourself in need of PediaCast A pediatric podcast for parents. This one is very family and work safe. Everyone, parent or not has experienced going to the doctor and forgetting to ask a question or just not getting a full answer because the appointment goes so quick. On
PediaCast Dr. Mike takes the time to fully answer all those questions. He also does episodes on current pediatric news and interviews specialists in the area of pediatrics. PediaCast is an excellent resource for parents.

Music on this show was now then soon by 3rd Man from the Podsafe Music Network, also the Village Haus Music Loop for which we have Paul Berrie from Window to the Magic to thank. We can also thank Paul for the outro non-music music just called “Matterhorn”. It’s a bit long, four minutes , but if you have fond Disney memories then you are in for a treat. If your one of those Disney haters and you’re still listening, you might want to skip the next 4 minutes.

PodcastJunky Show #017 Grammar Girl – call in #(714) 855-2639

I share the best stuff on my ipod and ask you the question…What are you listening to? And to answer that question, my call in line (714) 855-2639.

On today’s show Grammar Girl. Grammar Girl is the Flagship show on The Quick and Dirty Tips Network Other shows on the network are:

All of the shows are just a few minutes long and their motto is “Fun, Friendly, Practical advise to help you do things better”.

Since the shows are only a few minutes long, finding just a clip to play is a bit challenging. So I’m going to play for you an entire episode entitled:
Top Ten Grammar Myths,Episode 97

Please visit the above link for the text of Grammar Girls episode 97.

Now Grammar girl is not usually a top ten kind of show. I picked that episode because it gives you a flavor for the types of topics she covers. Normally she takes one topic a fleshes it out a bit more. She first gives the rule, with all the fancy words that, for me, fly in one ear and right out the other side. But then she gives examples and easy ways to remember the rules.
English class was never this quick or this much fun.

Don’t forget her book Grammar Girl’s Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing can be preordered at Amazon.com, BooksAMillion.com, and you can also preorder it from your local bookseller by searching Booksense.com. If its anything like her podcast it will be a handy reference guide, especially if you don’t want to wade through hours of archived shows.

INFECTEDSpeaking of books, don’t forget to send in your entry for a signed of Scott Sigler’s INFECTED. The date for this giveaway has been extended. I did not account enough for time shifting habits of the listeners and so entries are just now starting to role in. The new date is May 28.

Because of shipping costs this offer is good only in the Continental United States. If you are outside the US you are more than welcome to enter the contest but I will ask you to cover the mailing costs if you win.

Now for some link love:

In toady’s intro I used the same two shows mentioned in episode 16 because I completely to talk about link love last time.

The Geek Spin is a music show for us geeks.
From the same crew that brings you PodCulture, Brad plays music with a fun and “geeky” spin.

Sundered is a science fiction podcast novel that is in pre-production. I ran across the first prelude episode and it blew me away.

The author
Raphael Tehan is currently discovering just how much work it is to create a podcast. He probably thought he was done when he finished his novel. No no, not in a web 2.0 world. Now Raphael will be putting in countless hours to podcast it. He has 2 prelude episodes out now so if you like them, send him some email encouragement. It may help keep him going during the 2am editing sessions.

Music on this show was now then soon by 3rd Man and the
outro music will be Exclamation by The FuMP. Thanks to the Podsafe Musc Network or whatever they are calling themselves now for making it legal for me to play them.

That’s it for me.

*added the next morning:
Oh wait that’s not it for me. I recorded that last night and was ready to hit publish this morning when I exchanged emails with
Jack Hosley, the wonderful @WNDRWolf on twitter. On his show Wander Radio, Jack podcasts and blogs about books, audio dramas, music, funny commercials and parodies. He covers both his own work and others. He is also the person who turned me on to the song you are about to hear. This morning he educated me on the band. The Fump is actually the Funny Music Project. Which is a group of artists that specialize in novelty songs. The band playing Exclamation is actually called Brobdingnagian Bards here is Andrew from the Bards to pronounce the bands name properly.

From The Geek Spin to Sundered
I share the best stuff on my ipod and ask you the question…What are you listening to?
…and to answer that question, my call in line (714) 855-2639My “Official” PodcastJunky sidekick, Erin and I had a blast at Scott Sigler ’s INFECTED Launch on Wednesday. The talk and signing at Book soup went great and the place was packed.

Book Soup also created some cool signage for him. It’s a blow up of the book cover about 3 feet tall. He understandably wanted to take it home but it’s not exactly a convenient size to take on the rest of the book tour so he asked if I could send it to him.
Oh you’ll get your sign back Scott. But it’s going on a little trip first. Kind of Flat Stanly style. That’s right, some time in the next week or so Disneyland is going to get INFECTED.

After the signing we went to the world famous Rainbow Room. which is near the world famous Viper Room. It may be world but that section of Sunset strip is part of the seedy side of the glitzy LA/ Hollywood seen. It was perfect for Sigler.
That boy has a quick wit and he is seriously on top of his game. I got a tiny preview of his plans to take over the world. Which probably means he plans to kill me soon because I know too much, so I’d better get this out quick.

His plans start with taking over the publishing industry and let me tell you…he’s not just going to take over the industry, he’s going to turn it sideways, shake it like a rabid dog with a bone and then sucker punch it until it begs for forgiveness. I can’t wait.

Special thanks to AstralAudio for helping to make my audio INFECTED

Lets get on to the next topic.

I hope you enjoyed…well enjoyed isn’t really the right word but I hope you listened to the Joe Murphy tribute that I put on the feed April 1. Hopefully you also got the other episode on the feed earlier that day. If not, check your pod-catcher, it’s probably set to pick up only the most recent show.

Joe from On the Podcast and I decided to have a bit of April fools day fun. We have this unofficial non binding verbal agreement that I would shy away a bit from covering books and he would tend to cover mostly books and music podcasts. We chose cooperation and cross promotion over competition.

But sometimes we want to switch focus and cover something out of our specialty. We decided to do the first one on April Fools day and just flat out take over each other’s shows. So if you missed the episode Joe did on free planet X you can find it at PodcstJunky.com

On that episode he painstakingly transcribed and quoted my comments on him, his show and how I found it. Not just the words but every studer, fall start, um, ah and Space Casey Tangent. That must have taken a long time to transcribe every single mistake. I’m not sure if I should be honored or if I should be getting a restraining order.

SBSister Feedback

That was SBSister from twitter The SB stands for Sleeping Beauty so we now have royalty on the show, and she is listening to
Window to the Magic 24

Now before we get to the Tee Morris interview I have some feedback from a new listener. It came in to both myself and Erin the “Official” PodcastJunky sidekick. and it says:

Okay ladies – as an “official” best friend, I thought it was about time I subscribed to Podcast Junky and got into the whole podcast thing (I have to admit, it’s a bit overwhelming).

First of all, Megan…you have such a pleasant voice to listen to over the airwaves. It made me smile. You sound so professional. I love it.

My other comment is about what you covered in your latest episode about Quackcast. When he was reading off the symptoms for this “Canada syndrome” thing…it sounded more like he was describing pregnancy!! Ha ha.

Thanks for your time – Valerie (new Podcast Junky fan)

That was so very sweet of you Val. Thank you! Now you listeners need to know that Valerie is about to burst with her second child, a baby girl so she is quite familiar with those pregnancy symptoms. And as you may have guest she is also one of my best friends. But since Erin already has her title as The “Official” PodcastJunky Sidekick I think we can upgrade you from an “official” best friend to The “Official” Best Friend of the podcast Junky. Consider yourself so dubbed.

J.C. Hutchins Promo for Liz Strauss and SOBcon

Now Valerie, The “Official” PodcastJunky Best Friend recently confided in me that she when we first met she didn’t think I liked her. In fact she told Erin this and Erin had to explain to her that I was just shy. Shy you say? well yes.
It’s completely different behind the microphone. I’m shy especially in social situations. I don’t jump in and start talking to people because I don’t assume that they will like or want to talk to me.

Apparently this comes off as some kind of snootiness or dislike for the people around me. This is completely unintentional. So if you see me at a meet-up or expo please stop me and say hello because I’m probably secretly trying to get up the nerve to talk to you.

This leads me directly to today’s interview with Tee Morris because he is just the opposite. A few seconds with him and I felt comfortable. There were a bunch of other people at the Expo who came across the same way. Charled Cadenhead from Mostly News and Desperate Husbands and
Victor Cajiao from Typical Mac User come to mind. People like this immediately make you feel welcomed, and it’s quite sincere.

I’ve gotten to know Tee Morris or should I say @TeeMonster on twitter over the last few months. Twitter is kind of an instant message combined with overlapping circles of friends in chat rooms. It can not be described it must be experienced. I’ve gotten to know a lot of people on twitter and I can honestly say that with Tee, what you see is what you get. He really is a genuine nice guy.

Enough yapping from me, on with the interview which was my part of the April Fools day antics so it’s done in the On The Podcast format and originally went out on his feed.
