When I lived in the Chicago area, I used to hear Thomas Jefferson guy on a local radio show fairly regularly. Dude rules.

Sorry to hear about your husband's lay off. I'm not kidding when I type that, as you were saying that through my headphones ,I was chatting with someone on iChat who was telling me about his dad being laid off from a job. Damn.

I tendto be skeptical of people who call themselves "social media experts." This seems to be happening more and more as Twitter continues to grow. It's a discouraging trend.

Good luck in your pursuit of a career in social media! I think you'd do great in a job like that.

Funny you should bring this up. Tee Morris and I are in the process of writing a steampunk serial for podcast, and yes we plan to charge a fee for it. The first 1 or 2 episodes will be free so people can decide if it is worth it before shelling out their money. The price will be at most 99c per episode, with a saving if you pay for the series as a whole.
And why are we doing this? Well, both of us are moving towards being professional writers- I have given up one day a week to dedicate to writing. So you see I need to make it pay- not a lot, but at least a little.
Books and Braun is not a previously published writing, it is something we are creating for the podcast, and there will be hours and hours involved in the writing and the editing and the production. It is essentially an audio novel.
Will it work and produce at least a little money for its writers? I do not know. Time will tell. Both Tee and I will still have plenty of free content available (5+ novels and many other misc podcasts between us), but we have decided to dip our toe into the paying world.
For us it is not about superior, it is about valuing what we do as writers and podcasters. And I see it, in this instance as no different than listening to a novel podcast and going out and buying the book to support the author.

The thing is, the total podcast audience isn't nearly big enough (yet) to really support very many "professional" podcasters. You need something like 100,000 fans (or 10,000 really hardcore fans) to make it work, and frankly most of us aren't even close.

Podiobooks (as a site with HUGE amounts of content) and Escape Pod (one of the biggest SF short story markets in the WORLD) break even on donations.

Most of the rest of us can't hope to ever be that big.

I do my show for free, because quite frankly, I know there are other erotica podcasts out there (and not a dang one of us listed on iTunes -- not the good ones anyway). I want to write and share stories and there's not a huge market out there for those tales individually. As a collection of short stories, maybe, but only if I can show I have an audience. So I podcast my stuff, see if anyone is listening, and then I can tell a publisher, "Hey, I know I have an audience!" At least it gets me a contract.

As a podcast listener, I couldn't afford to pay for podcasts at all. I agree there is some really great stuff out there, but if I had to start paying for it, I'd do without. Like you said, a dollar here, five dollars there, it adds up very quickly. My paycheck as a stay-at-home mom doesn't cover that much (and neither does my erotica writer paycheck... yet).

I have no problem with charging for an extra feed - like Dr. Floyd does (and you get episodes faster and unique episodes just for those members of the club). But yeah, there's too much good stuff out there for me to pay for a podcast.

Ps. My ego's really the biggest.

Sorry but not surprised to hear of your problems. Don't be deceived in to thinking that Dell has somehow turned a corner in customer service as a result of things like this getting resolved.

Your own, and many other thousands of stories, are still circulating on a weekly basis despite two years of promises from Micheal Dell to turn things around. Sadly, it is 'business as usual" at Dell.

My own blog tracks dell and has done so for well over a year now and hence my not being surprised by your sad story!

Sorry Future Dark Overlord(TM), but it had to be done to make my point:-)

Only someone with an ego bigger than yours could think their content should cost money when you are giving it away for free.

If you think about it, they are saying their content is better than yours. They need to feel the wrath of Sigler.

What a brilliant posting - giving both sides of the argument as well as a clear picture of the podcast "cycle".

My own ego is so big that I'm willing to give my own podcast away for free :-)

Once again... brilliant posting - well done.
